A Broad-Based Coalition
To Save Our FutuRE
The Black Hills are a green island known for its beautiful forests, granite rock spired peaks, and fresh flowing water in the northern Great Plains. They are unique geologically, ecologically, historically, and economically.
The Black Hills are sacred to the Lakota and other regional tribes, and Lakota people have worked to protect them for hundreds of years. The Black Hills, the site of Mt. Rushmore, are cherished for it outdoor recreation including world class hunting, fishing, and biking.
Extraordinary Togetherness
In the last 45 years, South Dakotans of all backgrounds, alongside their regional neighbors and supporters, have joined together to successfully protect this special area from uranium mining, missile testing, and hazardous waste dumps.
Indigenous and white, old and young, from all political persuasions, we continue to join together. We call the Black Hills our home and place for recreation and relaxation. New mining threatens our community and poses irreversible harm to the beautiful the lands and waters of the Black Hills we cherish.
What We’re Calling For
A permanent mineral withdrawal, ordered through an Act of Congress or at least a temporary withdrawal put in place by the Administration, will protect the precious forests, waters, and biodiversity of the Black Hills, and western South Dakota, for current and future generations.
Worthy of this land
Those of us who live here know it is something worth protecting, but we are up against international mining companies. We are working hard to stop them, but we need help from people across South Dakota, the United States, and beyond.
A mineral withdrawal would prevent future mining exploration drilling and catastrophic open pit mining for years to come. It would protect sacred lands, living waters, wildlife, human health, and our local economy.
